Oscar Ichazo

Oscar Ichazo (1931–2020) was a Bolivian philosopher and mystic who sought to map human consciousness and liberate individuals from the illusions of the ego. Founder of the Arica Institute, he blended Eastern traditions, Western psychology, and esoteric wisdom into a rigorous system of self-transcendence.

Best known for innovating the Enneagram into a tool for spiritual awakening, Ichazo saw it not as a personality test but as a path to freedom. As his teachings spread, he grew disillusioned by their commercialization, stating, “They took the map but left the territory.” His legacy remains both influential and controversial—a challenge to those who seek not just self-knowledge, but true transformation.

“We have to distinguish between a man as he is in essence, and as he is in ego or personality. In essence, every person is perfect, fearless, and in a loving unity with the entire cosmos; there is no conflict within the person between head, heart, and stomach or between the person and others. ”
